Episode 28: Communication, Healthy Relationships, and Sparking Change | Rick Ornelas

TUNE IN: APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | STITCHER

Today I had Rick Ornelas, a Positive Change Expert, which I think is so remarkable, given the times! He is the author of “12 Hours of Heaven: Lessons for a Better World” and the founder of I Spark Change, an online community of those who seek to make the world a better place, one act at a time.

He teaches men and women to unlock their amazing potential to create an incredible future and change the world around them.

In today’s episode, I ask Rick about the important lessons he learned from the pandemic, which is where the inspiration to finally write down his idea he had for his book: 12 Hours of Heaven: Lessons for a Better World. Rick shares his story of what happened to his family years ago, and he had been carrying around this idea for 20 years. When the pandemic hit, he decided to use his positive mindset as an opportunity to something he had wanted to do for many years and just hadn’t started.

Rick created a coaching business 6 years ago. However, during 2020, his business slowed, because of clients needing to scale back, etc. Rick talks about going through divine intervention, experiencing floods of ideas, writing every day, and his ideas just kept coming. This is where he felt a calling to do more than what he was doing. He wanted to improve the world more. This is where his company I Spark Change came from. He has a Facebook Community that he is continuing to work on growing. He also offers Level UP Your Life coaching to Gen Z clients who feel stuck and help coach them to be a better version of themselves.

He shares about 5 areas that he teaches on:

  • Mindset

  • Communication

  • Goals

  • Habits

  • Leadership

It starts inward. Once you get a handle on mindset, you can grow and better communicate with others. Then you start growing and setting goals. He then helps with effective ways of creating ways of action to drive the goals and habits to ensure you are being the best version of yourself. Lastly, he does leadership. He sees leadership in everyone regardless of their title and role. Leadership matters in how you interact and come across to the world. That’s how you lead others.

Rick is a Father to 3 girls and shares and how they really taught him how to love deeply and unconditionally. From looking at a little life that you created, to the excitement of a toddler, and seeing them grow and have deeper conversations with them as they look at the world differently, it’s been very, very valuable to him to be their father.

We talk about how he has kept his marriage of 25 years fun, healthy and loving. He gives some very wise advice in that you have to show and be your best self around the people you love. Don’t take their closeness for granted. It’s something that he works on every day, and something he has continuously worked on building up to his 25th anniversary. Every relationship takes work. Constant work and attention.

And also in this episode, you will hear about a lesson he learned from washing the dishes. This is something he learned in 2020 and something I think we ALL can take with us into 2021!
