Episode 40: Understanding Your Gut and Functional Medicine | Dr. Peter Kozlowski M.D.

My guest today is Dr. Peter Kozlowski M.D. who is the author of #1 Best Seller, Unfunc Your Gut. He uses a broad array of tools to find the source of the body’s dysfunction. He takes the time to listen to his patients and plots their history on a timeline, considering what makes them unique and co-creating with them a truly individualized care plan. Currently, he works with patients online and in-person via his Chicago, Illinois, and Bozeman, Montana offices.  Dr. Kozlowski did his residency in Family Practice, but started training in Functional Medicine as an intern. He trained in the clinics with leaders in his field including Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Deepak Chopra, and Dr. Susan Blum.

Most of the time doctors who transition from traditional medicine to functional medicine usually have a story of getting sick, trying what they learned, and not getting better. 

Dr. Kozlowski has a similar story in that he had a mental health illness that brought him into transitioning into gut health and functional medicine practice. 

After training and going into family practice residency, he realized he had an alcohol problem, though he never thought being so successful that he was an alcoholic. After realizing he couldn’t function without it he went to a treatment center.

Dr. Kozlowski shares about receiving treatment for alcoholism, which taught him to think about the why and find the underlying cause. He learned things like meditation, exercise, acupuncture, and found these methods to be very beneficial. He went back to residency but with a much more open mind. 

After receiving his treatment, he went back into family practice residency and realized that the residency practice was close-minded and only looked at medicine one way.

However, working there allowed him to work with many different trainers. One of which practiced functional medicine. After going to a conference about it, he could never look at medicine the same again!

With mental, emotional, and spiritual health, we each have to find what works for us, and there are so many different things you can do. Mental, emotional, and spiritual health is something Dr. Kozlowski works on every single day and encourages his patients to do so as well.

So, what makes his approach different from traditional medical practitioners? 

They are testing what is the imbalance in your system and then they are correcting that imbalance. So looking for the root cause, and sometimes it takes using an elimination diet or other testing. 

There are five main root causes he looks at:

  • Food

  • Gut health

  • Hormone Imbalances

  • Toxins

  • Mental and Emotional and Spiritual health

We also chat about what people can do for their diet after they find out all of this information, and what Dr. Kozlowski thinks of dieting in today’s culture.
