Episode 24: Unpack the Misconceptions of Fitness and Nutrition | Erik Marthaler

Erik Marthaler, the owner of LATERAL FITNESS, will be joining me in today’s episode. He has over 21 years of experience in the fitness world. He has a Bachelors of Science degree with a focus on Kinesiology: Exercise Science and Fitness from Illinois State University. Erik has a USAT (USA Triathlon) Level 1, USAC Level 3 Certified Coach, USATF (USA Track and Field), ACE (American Council in Exercise), HKC Kettlebell, and a TRX certification. Erik is also a Metabolic Efficiency Training Specialist (METS), which teaches the body how to burn fat more efficiently during exercise.

As a highly experienced trainer and coach, Erik has worked extensively with a wide range of clients who seek out training for: weightloss, post-surgery rehabilitation, pre and postnatal, cardiac rehab, fitness show preparation, Multisport (sprint to Ironman) athletes, and most importantly, people who just want a healthy lifestyle. When it comes to training the body, Erik takes a Periodization style of training and systematic approach to individualize each client’s training program from beginner to Elite. He understands that each individual is different and needs specific attention to their goals, asymmetries, and neuromuscular issues. By individualizing each program, he is extremely successful in helping his clients reach and exceed their physical goals.

As an elite athlete, Erik has qualified for the Team USA Triathlete and Duathlete team since 2009, has multiple podium wins as a multisport athlete, and is a 2013 Mid-East Regional Duathlete Champion.

Erik shares why fitness is so important to his life, his journey to becoming a trainer, what it takes to be a duathlete and triathlete, and how he stayed regimented through his training. In addition, he will unpack misconceptions of fitness and nutrition, and gives some awesome analogies that will make you understand just how our metabolism works - or maybe isn’t working like you desire!

Erik is multi-talented and is an amazing photographer. He shares how he finds time to create art in his free time, and puts what he enjoys doing as a high priority.
