Summer Secrets to Staying Healthy & Happy

Have you noticed that sometimes it harder to eat healthy but easy to find a workout regimen in the summer? With the outdoors being available, I find plenty of opportunities to workout; however, it’s much harder to maintain a clean eating lifestyle. Why is that?

When living in the city there are so many activities in the summer like outdoor concerts, outdoor patio happy hours and social sports activities that eating out becomes extremely convenient. A lot of my clients find it difficult to say no to meeting up with friends or co-workers and on top of that it's gorgeous outside!

Here are 5 simple ways to stay healthy & happy this summer:

  1. Meal prep Mondays. While you're cooking, find a song/artist that resonates with you to make the time pass. (My favorite song to cook to is at the bottom of this post). At the beginning of the week I find it helpful to make delicious meals that I can Tupperware for the week. This way I know what ingredients are actually in my food versus a restaurant that places way too much salt, butter, and oil in their food. In addition, pack healthy snacks like nuts/carrots/ hummus to reduce your sugary and processed food cravings at work.

  2. Grab and Go Good Eats: Find restaurants that are vegetarian or vegan friendly near your home and office because chances are their food will provide cleaner sandwich, salad and beverage options.

  3. Sunday Nights make room for a little you time. Grocery shopping, cooking Yoga, meditation, cleaning, read a book, and going for a walk are all great ways to unwind from the weekend and jumpstart the new week.

  4.  Stay hydrated! With the humidity being high, it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day not just with meals. Drinking water is not only great for your metabolism but helps support our digestive system.

  5. Set up a Social week calendar with your meals (start small 1 item per day)

Example:

Monday: Meal Prep (Chicken/Package Salads/Create healthy snack packs)

Tuesday: Softball (Protein Powered lunch)

Weds: Co-Worker Happy Hour (Big Salad for lunch)

Thurs: Date Night (Protein Smoothie with fruit for breakfast)

Friday: Ladies Night (Treat yourself to a dessert)

Saturday: Date Night- Outdoor Concert (Wine, Cheese, Sandwiches)

Sunday: Find a new recipe to try out with a friend, family, or significant other.

Every week your schedule will change so be open to going with the flow and not stressing yourself out over an off meal or week. Progression not perfection!!

"Got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you, all is groovy" - Simon & Garfunkel
