TUNE IN: APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | STITCHER
I am ecstatic to have an amazing author with us today, Jessie Asya Kanzer. Jessie is here to share with us what it’s like to live by the principles of Tao Te Ching!
Jessie was born in the Soviet Union. At the age of eight, she immigrated with her family to Brooklyn. She is a writer, former reporter, and actress. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wallstreet Journal, the Independent New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. Her book, Don’t Just Sit There, Do NOTHING: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching will be available wherever books are sold on March 1st, 2022. Jessie lives with her two daughters and husband in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
We start this interview with Jessie sharing about how she immigrated from the Soviet Union, and what that journey looked like for her.
Before Jessie’s book, there were almost no books about the Tao Te Ching written by women. There were no books that dealt with how these principles applied to a modern woman’s life which is what brought Jessie to writing her book.
Dealing with anxiety, depression, and bulimia, Jessie was looking for a way to lift herself up.
The Tao Te Ching was central in her upliftment.
One of the founding teachings in Tao Te Ching is: Change your thoughts, change your life. This idea that everything we seek, everything we need is already within us. And if we just take the time to do NOTHING, to sit still and reconnect with our own inner voice, the answers will come, the knowledge will come.
It’s about constant reconnection to yourself. Jessie also found that in doing this, happiness truly comes from doing the inner work. Not from any material things, or people, but from yourself.
Jessie shares a story from her past in which she learned from her behavior, and now understands and knows that there is no situation from which you can not rise. In fact, when you have nothing, when you’ve lost everything, sometimes it’s the best place to recreate yourself anew. And that’s exactly what Jessie did.
Following our intuition can also come into our roles as parents. Sometimes we need to follow our intuition in making decisions for our children, and not just go by what we have heard or read about. Of course, If you are looking to learn and gain knowledge, yes, listen and read those things. But ask yourself if it rings true with your gut.
Jessie was so inspiring and I know you are going to learn so much from our conversation! Enjoy!
